What is the aim of the course?

The GCSE Geography course provides students with the opportunities to develop the following skills:

  • identify relevant geographical questions and issues and establish appropriate sequences of investigation, incorporating geographical skills and enquiry skills
  • carry out fieldwork and out-of-classroom learning
  • use new technologies, including GIS, to assist geographical investigation
  • extract and interpret information from a range of sources, including field observations, maps (including Ordnance Survey maps of different scales), drawings, photographs (ground, aerial and satellite imagery), diagrams and tables 
  • acquire and use geographical vocabulary 
  • communicate in a variety of ways including extended writing and graphical forms
  • describe, analyse and interpret evidence, making decisions, drawing and justifying conclusions and communicating findings in ways appropriate to the task audience 
  • evaluate methods of collecting, presenting and analysing evidence and the validity and limitations of evidence and conclusions.

What will you study in this subject?

The course is divided into four units.

Unit 1: Geographical Skills and Challenges - this unit covers the following:

  • cartographic, graphical, geographical enquiry, ICT and GIS skills
  • issues that have arisen from climate
  • change and sustainable development

It is assessed by a 1 hour 15 minutes examination and accounts for 25% of the grade.

Unit 2: The Natural Environment - this unit covers the following topics:

  • The physical world
  • Environmental issues

It is assessed by a 1 hour 15 minutes examination and accounts for 25% of the grade

Unit 3: The Human Environment - this unit covers the following topics:

  • The human world
  • People issues

It is assessed by a 1 hour 15 minutes examination and accounts for 25% of the grade

Unit 4: Investigating Geography - this unit is internally assessed under controlled conditions.  

  • Students have to complete a fieldwork investigation and report.

It accounts for 25% of the grade.
