What is the aim of the course?
- The Mathematics course aims to encourage students to develop confidence in, and a positive attitude towards, mathematics and to recognise the importance of mathematics in their own lives and to society.
- This course prepares students to make informed decisions about everyday problems and situations, such as the management of money, further learning opportunities and career choices.
What will you study in this subject?
Students will develop their knowledge, skills and understanding of mathematical methods and concepts, including:
- Ratio, proportion and rates of change
- Geometry and Measures
They will have the opportunity to acquire and use problem solving strategies. Use their knowledge and understanding to make connections between mathematics concepts. It will also develop their skills to reason mathematically, make deductions and inferences and draw conclusions.
What skills will you use in this course?
Numeracy skills form the basis of this course, but in addition reading and writing skills are very important. The ability to represent, interpret and analyse problems will also be essential.
How will your work be assessed?
There are three written papers:
- Paper 1 (non-calculator)
- Paper 2 (calculator)
- Paper 3 (calculator).
Each paper is worth 33.3% of the final grade and they are each 1 hour 30 minutes long.
There are two tiers of examination:
- Foundation: grades 1-5
- Higher: grades 4-9
