What is the aim of the course?

To enable students to develop:

  • an understanding of Spanish in a variety of contexts
  • a knowledge of Spanish vocabulary and structures
  • transferable language learning skills 
  • the ability to communicate effectively in Spanish
  • awareness and understanding of countries and communities where Spanish is spoken.

What will you study in this subject?

The course is divided into four units.

Unit 1: Listening in Spanish - this unit draws on vocabulary and structures from across the four specified common topic areas. Students will be tested on their ability to understand spoken Spanish.  Testing is through a variety of tasks which require a response, written or non-verbal, to demonstrate understanding.

It is assessed by a 25 or 35-minute examination and accounts for 20% of the grade.

Unit 2: Speaking in Spanish - this unit is assessed internally under controlled conditions.   The focus of the speaking test will be chosen by the teacher in consultation with the student and will relate to one or more of the following themes: media and culture; sport and leisure; travel and tourism; business, work and employment.

This unit accounts for 30% of the grade.

Unit 3: Reading in Spanish - students will be tested on their ability to understand written Spanish.  Testing is through a variety of tasks which require a response, written or non-verbal, to demonstrate understanding.

It is assessed by a 35 or 50 minute examination and accounts for 20% of the grade.

Unit 4: Writing in Spanish - this unit is completed under controlled conditions and externally marked.  Students must complete 2 separate writing tasks from the following: media and culture; sport and leisure; travel and tourism; business, work and employment.

It accounts for 30% of the GCSE grade.
